What the registry says about new cardiovascular trials this quarter

Since 1 July 2026, ClinicalTrials.gov has recorded 1,645 studies under cardiovascular disease with a start date in that window. 1,249 are interventional and 415 are currently recruiting.

By phase

  • Phase 1: 98
  • Phase 2: 168
  • Phase 3: 121
  • Phase 4: 86

The phase spread here is noticeably flatter than in cancer, where Phase 2 studies outnumber Phase 3 by about four to one. In cardiovascular research the numbers sit much closer together, and Phase 4 — studies of treatments already approved — makes up a larger share.

That fits a field with a long list of established drugs. A great deal of cardiovascular research is about using existing treatments better: in whom, at what dose, in what combination.

Most records list no phase at all, which is why the phase figures fall well short of the total. Observational studies, registries and much device research sit outside the phase system.

Counts taken from the ClinicalTrials.gov API on 7 October 2026, covering studies with a registered start date on or after 1 July 2026. Registry numbers move as records are added and updated, so treat them as a snapshot rather than a fixed figure.
